Simple Zone Detection Based on Signal Strength

The lighthouse principle is an alternative indoor positioning method that does not require full fingerprinting of each room. Instead, one or more X‑Guard Beacons are placed within a zone. Based on the Bluetooth signal they emit, the app determines whether a user is close enough to that area.

How the Lighthouse Principle Works
The beacons continuously broadcast their unique ID via Bluetooth. The X‑Guard Alarm app measures the signal strength received. Based on this, it determines whether the user is close enough to the beacon to assume they are in the corresponding zone.

This enables location awareness without in-depth fingerprinting. While slightly less precise, it is accurate enough for general zone detection.

Note: Risk of signal mismatch on stacked floors
Because the system works on signal strength rather than exact position, a mismatch can occur if rooms are directly above or below each other. A beacon’s signal from one floor may still be detected on the other, causing incorrect zone identification.

Types of Beacons

Battery-Powered Beacons

  • Use: For general zone location based on the lighthouse principle.

  • Lifespan: Up to 6 years with ER14505 batteries.

  • Monitoring: Monthly status reports.

WiFi Networks with Bluetooth

  • Use: Uses WiFi infrastructure with Bluetooth support.

  • Requirements: UUID, floor plan, Major/Minor values.

  • Monitoring: Monthly reporting.

Mains-Powered Beacons

  • Use: For constant and accurate zone detection.

  • Installation: At least 15 mm of free space behind power sockets.

  • Monitoring: Monthly check reports.

Mounting and Installation

Our experts ensure that the beacons are placed correctly. Depending on the case, the beacons are:

  • Mounted with screws,

  • Attached using Velcro,

  • Or embedded when mains-powered.
